Match Report Dennehy Cup semi final v Highfield

Played under a bruised sky at Moneygourney, Highfield started the better team in this Dennehy Cup semi final, and were camped in the Carrig half for the opening ten minutes. Bar the blustery conditions Highfield might have showed dividends for their pressure but were unable to convert a penalty from just outside the 22 on the left. Eventually in the 12th minute Carrig relieved the pressure and got into the Highfield half. However Carrigaline continued to cripple themselves with needless penalties and a lack of aggression at ruck time which gave Highfield the upper hand. Some good rucking and mauling from their forwards and strong running from their centres made ground into Carrigaline territory. Eventually Highfield were able to make their advantage pay when Darragh O’Keefe was able to land a penalty on 19 minutes. Jason Corkery entered the fray on 20 minutes which gave better impetus and shape to the backline but he was unable to do anything when Highfield crashed over on the right in the 24th minute. Their second centre made the initial break and two passes later wing Darren Walsh was in after cover defence was sucked in. The conversion was made to leave the score 10-0. This try seemed to spur Carrigaline into life and the forwards rucked and mauled well into the 22 and after somesustained pressure and an excellent maul Kieran Kelleher touched down. In the windy conditions Donnacha Kiely was unable to add the extras. Carrigaline were in the ascendancy now and were making ground through forwards and backs alike and they fashioned a second score just before half time. The forwards in particular Aidan O’Reilly and Kieran Kelleher carried well. John Tait recycled ball quickly and put Donnacha Kiely away on the left and he weighted abeautiful grubber to the left corner where Kevin Foley was able to touch down. Again the conversion was missed to leave the half time score 10-10. Carrigaline were unable to carry that momentum into the second half and again Highfield applied pressure and it told when in broken play their wing Darren Walsh broke down the right and scored after some poor Carrig tackling. The conversion was missed but Highfield were ahead 15-10. The play on both teams parts was scrappy for the next 20 minutes with neither team gaining a foothold however John Tait was able to add a penalty to bring Carrig within touching distance midway through the half. Eventually in the final ten minutes Carrigaline were able to put the phases together and after some good running byJason Corkery and Aidan O’Reilly they got a penalty just outside the Highfield 22. In difficult conditions John Tait was able to boot Carrigaline ahead 16-15 and surely give them the game. But Highfield weren’t done yet. They built the phases and eventually were given a penalty just outside the 22 in the final minute. Kick the penalty and it was ecstacy, miss for agony. Fortunately for Carrig and unfortunately for Highfield the kick was inches wide. Carrigaline had a chance to clear their lines from the 22 dropout but a mix up in clearing it gave Highfield one more chance with a midfield scrum. Nerves were frayed on and off the field at this stage for Carrigaline but a knock on gave the hosts the ball and they were able to clear their lines for victory. Carrigaline will need to up their performance in the decider next week if they want to stand any chance of winning.
